Laid to the Side is a landmark collection of hair stories exploring the meaning of hair and Black women's identity development within the context of schools.
It is both essay and creative non-fiction; personal and global; and interrogates the question of what it means to love yourself and your hair.
This book is as nostalgic as waking up to grandma’s cooking or jumping double Dutch on the playground. Braids. Burettes. And those colorful balls we’ve still yet to agree on a name for. You can see them and even hear them when reading these essays. Each one demonstrates our black hair’s collective similarities and the differences in our origin stories of navigating a white world. And most importantly how our hair impacted how we came to navigate America. We, the black women. It’s a read for the black girl who needs to remember and for anyone else who has wondered : what makes black hair so significant? After having read this book you walk away knowing IT’S DEEPER THAN HAIR.
